Daith Piercing 101: what you need to know

Daith Piercing 101: what you need to know

Nestled snugly in the innermost fold of your ear, this unique piercing has become a new favourite to new and seasoned piercees. Whilst some claim the piercing to have healing properties- unfortunately there is not enough evidence supporting this- however, that doesn’t stop the Daith piercing from adding a beautiful statement to your ear curation.

Read on below to discover the ins and outs of the Daith piercing!

What is a Daith Piercing?

A Daith Piercing is located in the thick, curved part of cartilage just above the ear canal. Due to its complex placement, it’s one of the trickier places to pierce, so you definitely want a piercer who knows what they’re doing (lucky for you our SkinKandy piercers are the best in the biz).

Though it’s in a tricky spot, we’re seeing more and more clients coming in for a Daith Ear Piercing thanks to its distinctive look.

These piercings look stunning as the natural curves of the ear beautifully complement the contours of the jewellery. The placement also allows for a variety of jewellery options, from simple hoops to more elaborative, decorative pieces. So it’s a pretty versatile little spot.

Daith Piercing facts: here’s what you need to know

Curious to discover more? You’re not alone. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about a Daith Ear Piercing, so before you take the plunge, explore the fundamentals with us.

What age can you get a Daith Piercing?

You can start rocking one at 13 years of age, with a parent or legal guardian’s permission. If you’re 16 or older, you can make that decision yourself. But a head’s up, if you’re in WA, you’ll need to wait until you’re 18 to get pierced without a parent’s approval.

How much does a Daith Piercing cost?

Here at SkinKandy our Daith Piercings start at just $45. We also have many jewellery style upgrades including premium titanium and 14k Gold. If you want to find out more, you can check out our Piercing Menu.

How is a Daith Piercing performed?

A daith piercing is performed using a needle, a needle receiving tube and a circular shaped piece of jewellery (horseshoe or segment ring). Usually done lying down, your piercer will angle the needle to ensure optimal placement of the jewellery. Experiences of pain differ per person, so it’s best to practise breathing exercises and ensure to eat beforehand.

How painful is a Daith Piercing?

When asked about Daith Piercing pain, many of our clients who get this type of piercing describe feeling a sharp, intense sensation in their ear during the piercing. They often tell us it’s a seven out of 10 on the pain scale. After it’s done, it's common to experience a dull ache in the area for a couple of days.

What’s the Daith Piercing healing time?

Healing times for any type of piercing varies from person to person, but for most people a Daith Piercing a minimum of 6 months to heal. Some people need a little more time though, depending on their immune system and aftercare routine.

In order to give your piercing the best chance to heal, it’s important to avoid sleeping on your piercing or wearing headphones or headgear that could irritate it.

What’s the lowdown on Daith Piercing aftercare?

Proper aftercare is crucial for preventing infection and ensuring your piercing heals well. When you shower, let the water gently rinse around your ear. Then, carefully dry the area around your new piercing.

Use an aftercare spray morning and night (we recommend sterile saline, which is available in store!). Don’t forget to refer to the aftercare guide that is given to you after your piercing!

It's really important to avoid touching your piercing or playing with the jewellery.

Even with aftercare an infected Daith Piercing can sometimes happen. If you notice any pain, swelling, redness or discharge from the piercing, which doesn’t clear up after a day or two, contact your piercer or see your GP.

The migraine piercing phenomenon: separating fact from fiction

The buzz around using a Daith Piercing for migraine relief has been circulating for a little while, with some people swearing by its potential to relieve their symptoms. So, what’s the deal?

The theory is that the Daith Piercing targets pressure points or helps soothe the vagus nerve. This, in turn, may alleviate migraine symptoms and anxiety.

So, does it work? It’s important to note that migraines and anxiety are complex conditions and there’s not a lot of science backing up the claim that these piercings are an effective treatment. Still, many people believe in the healing powers of a Daith Piercing for anxiety and migraines, and hey, even if it doesn’t heal you, rocking a Daith Ear Piercing can seriously up your style game!
