316L Surgical Steel is one of the most widely used materials in piercing jewellery, and it's what our SK Certified piercing specialists use for many fresh piercings in studio. This collection covers Surgical Steel jewellery for ear piercings, body placements and everything in between. It's a durable, affordable option that suits both new piercings and everyday wear, available across flatbacks, barbells, segment rings and more.
Is Surgical Steel safe for fresh piercings?
Yes, 316L Surgical Steel is safe for fresh piercings and is one of the materials our piercing specialists use for initial jewellery in studio. It resists corrosion, holds up well during the healing phase and is compatible with most skin types. If you have a known nickel sensitivity, Titanium or 14kt Gold are better alternatives, as Surgical Steel does contain trace nickel. For most people though, it's a reliable starting point that supports a smooth healing experience.
What's the difference between Surgical Steel and other metals?
316L Surgical Steel contains molybdenum, which gives it stronger corrosion resistance than standard stainless steel grades. This makes it better suited to body jewellery that sits against skin and is exposed to moisture. Compared to Titanium, Surgical Steel is heavier and more affordable, while Titanium is lighter and completely nickel-free. Both are solid choices for piercing jewellery, and many people start with Surgical Steel before exploring other materials as their collection grows.
Can I wear Surgical Steel if I have sensitive skin?
Surgical Steel works well for most people, but it's not considered hypoallergenic because it contains trace amounts of nickel. If your skin reacts to nickel or you've had irritation with metal jewellery before, Titanium and Gold are the safer options for both fresh and healed piercings. If you're unsure, start with Titanium for your initial piercing and try Surgical Steel once you're fully healed to see how your skin responds. Our piercing specialists can help you choose the right material during your appointment.
How do I clean Surgical Steel jewellery?
For fresh piercings, clean twice daily with saline solution as part of your regular aftercare routine. Our aftercare guide covers the full process. For healed piercings, warm soapy water and a soft cloth is all you need. Surgical Steel resists tarnishing well, but drying your jewellery properly after cleaning helps keep it looking sharp. Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners, as these can scratch the surface over time.
