Septum Ring Jewellery

Browse septum ring jewellery at SkinKandy, in titanium and gold, segment rings and horseshoes, for subtle to bold septum piercing styles.

A septum ring is jewellery worn in a septum piercing, which passes through the thin section of tissue between your nostrils.

Types of septum rings

  • Segment rings: a hinged hoop with a section that opens and closes into a continuous circle.
  • Horseshoes: an open-ended circular barbell that you twist into place, and the quickest style to flip up and hide the piercing.

What size septum ring do I need?

Septum jewellery is typically fitted at 16G in 8mm or 10mm, with 14G also available. The right diameter depends on the thickness of your septum tissue and how the ring needs to sit to clear the piercing comfortably. A ring that's too small can pinch, while one that's too large may sit awkwardly or flip up unintentionally. Your piercing specialist will confirm the exact size for your septum before fitting.

Is Surgical Steel safe for a fresh septum piercing?

Surgical Steel is what our piercing specialists use for fresh septum piercings in studio, and it's a safe, valid choice while you heal. Surgical Steel can be used in fresh piercings, though it can contain traces of nickel, so our piercing specialists recommend implant grade Titanium or 14K Gold during the healing phase, particularly if you have a known nickel sensitivity. A gold septum ring in 14K Gold is a nickel-free option. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, as this can cause the piercing to close and reinsertion risks irritation.

How does a segment ring compare to a horseshoe for septum piercings?

A segment ring is a hinged hoop that clicks into a continuous circle, while a horseshoe is an open-ended circular barbell that you twist into place. A horseshoe is faster to flip up and hide the piercing when needed, whereas a segment ring stays closed in a full circle. Both are available at 16G in 8mm or 10mm, so the choice often comes down to how often you want to conceal the piercing.

Can I hide a septum piercing?

Yes, once your septum piercing has healed you can flip the ring up into the nose to conceal it when you need to. A horseshoe is the quickest to flip up, since it's open-ended. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase. If you need a discreet option for work or school, our piercing specialists can talk you through retainers, which come in glass, acrylic or bioflex.

When can I change my septum jewellery?

Septum piercings need a minimum of 6 months to heal fully, and can take up to 12 months. Your piercer may recommend a downsize at around 6 to 8 weeks, swapping your ring for shorter, sterile jewellery, but this is not full healing. Keep your jewellery in place until your piercing has fully healed, unless one of our piercing specialists advises a change. Once you're healed, you can browse our nose jewellery range for more styles.
