Ball Captive Rings

Ball captive rings (BCRs), also known as captive bead rings, are a classic piercing jewellery style that works across a wide range of placements. A BCR features a circular ring held closed by a small ball that clicks into place under tension. SkinKandy stocks ball captive rings in Titanium, Surgical Steel and Gold across various gauges and diameters, making them a versatile option for ear piercings, septum, lip and body placements.

Which piercings can I wear a ball captive ring in?

Ball captive rings are one of the most adaptable jewellery styles available. They work well in lobe piercings, daith, septum, lip, eyebrow and many body piercing placements. The gauge and diameter you need will vary depending on the placement, so it's important to match both to what your piercing was done at. If you're unsure of your sizing, your piercing specialist can measure your current jewellery or recommend the right dimensions for your anatomy.

How do I choose the right size BCR?

You'll need to know two measurements: the gauge (thickness of the ring) and the internal diameter (the distance across the inside of the ring). Common gauges for BCRs range from 18G for lobes up to 14G for body piercings. Diameter depends on your placement and personal preference for how snugly the ring sits. If you're replacing an existing ball captive ring, measure your current piece or ask your piercing specialist for your specs before ordering.

Are ball captive rings safe for fresh piercings?

BCRs can be worn in fresh piercings when they're made from implant grade materials like Titanium or Gold. Your piercing specialist will choose the right gauge, diameter and material during your appointment to support healing. For some placements, flatbacks or barbells may be recommended over a BCR during the initial healing phase, as they tend to move less and cause less irritation. Once fully healed, ball captive rings are a comfortable everyday option.

Can the ball fall out of a BCR?

The ball in a ball captive ring is held in place by the tension of the ring itself, so it won't fall out during normal wear. If the ring loses tension over time or if the ball is inserted incorrectly, it can come loose. Check your BCR occasionally and make sure the ball clicks firmly into the groove. If it feels loose, your piercing specialist can adjust the tension or fit a fresh ring for you. Carrying a spare ball is a good habit if you wear BCRs regularly.
