Your piercing specialist will fit a slightly longer bar at first to allow room for swelling, then recommend a shorter length once healing settles.

What length tongue bar do I need?

Tongue barbells are fitted at 14G in 14mm to 16mm lengths, with the exact length depending on the thickness of your tongue and how much swelling occurs after piercing. A bar that's too short during the healing phase can put pressure on the underside of the tongue, so your piercing specialist will start with a longer length and downsize once swelling reduces. Getting this right matters more for tongue piercings than most other placements, since swelling is a normal and expected part of healing. Always let your piercing specialist confirm when it's time to change to a shorter bar.

Is Surgical Steel safe for a fresh tongue piercing?

Surgical Steel is what our piercing specialists use for fresh tongue piercings in studio, and it's a safe, valid choice for the healing phase. Surgical Steel can be used in fresh piercings, though our piercing specialists recommend implant grade Titanium during the healing phase, since Surgical Steel contains trace nickel and isn't hypoallergenic. 14K Gold is also a nickel-free option. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, as this can cause the piercing to close.

How does a standard tongue piercing compare to a tongue web piercing?

A standard tongue piercing goes through the centre of the tongue and is worn with a 14G barbell at 14mm to 16mm. A tongue web piercing, sometimes called a venom piercing when done as a pair, sits through the thinner webbing underneath the tongue and uses a smaller curved barbell or segment ring at 16G in 6mm or 8mm. The tongue web placement heals differently to a standard tongue piercing because the tissue is thinner, so your piercing specialist can talk you through what to expect for either option.

How do I care for a new tongue piercing?

Rinse with a saline solution and an alcohol-free mouthwash as advised by your piercing specialist, since oral piercings need a different routine from ear piercings. Try not to play with the jewellery against your teeth or gums, as this can irritate the piercing and wear on your teeth.
