What is implant grade titanium jewellery?
Implant grade Titanium, also called ASTM F136 Titanium, is a medical-grade metal that's lightweight, strong and highly resistant to corrosion. It doesn't contain the trace nickel found in Surgical Steel, which makes it a comfortable choice if you have sensitive skin or a known nickel allergy. Titanium jewellery is available in a wide range of finishes and colours, including anodised options, without compromising on safety. It's one of the three core materials we use across our jewellery range, alongside Surgical Steel and 14K Gold.
Which piercings suit Titanium jewellery?
Titanium jewellery suits almost every piercing placement we offer, from tragus and helix to nose and navel piercings. Ear placements are typically fitted with Titanium flatbacks, ballbacks or segment rings depending on the placement, while nose piercings use L-bend, nose twist or flatback styles. Navel piercings are fitted with a Titanium navel curved bar, and face and mouth placements like labret and philtrum use a flatback labret. Whatever you're getting pierced, there's a good chance Titanium is available as an option.
What sizes does titanium jewellery come in?
Sizing depends entirely on placement, so Titanium jewellery spans a wide range of gauges and lengths. Lobe piercings use 18G or 20G studs, cartilage placements like tragus, helix and conch use 16G in 6mm or 8mm flatbacks, and daith and anti-tragus jewellery also sit at 16G with a typical ring diameter of 8mm to 10mm. Nostril jewellery is fitted at 18G or 20G, while navel curved bars and dermal anchors both use a larger 14G. Your piercing specialist will confirm the exact gauge and length for your placement before fitting any new Titanium jewellery.
Is titanium better than surgical steel for sensitive skin?
Yes, Titanium is the better option if you have sensitive skin or a nickel allergy, since it doesn't contain the trace nickel found in Surgical Steel. Surgical Steel is safe for most people and is what our piercing specialists use for fresh piercings in studio, but it isn't hypoallergenic. If you know you react to nickel, or you'd simply rather avoid it altogether, Titanium or 14K Gold are the better choice during healing and beyond. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase if you decide to switch materials. Speak with your piercing specialist about swapping to Titanium once your piercing is ready for a jewellery change.
How does Titanium jewellery compare to Surgical Steel?
Titanium and Surgical Steel are both body-safe metals used across our jewellery range, but they differ in weight and composition. Titanium is noticeably lighter than Surgical Steel, which makes it a comfortable option for larger pieces like navel bars or longer barbells. Surgical Steel is more budget-friendly and is the material our piercing specialists use for fresh piercings in studio, while Titanium carries a slightly higher price point in exchange for being nickel-free. Both are durable, tarnish-resistant choices, so the decision often comes down to sensitivity, weight preference and budget rather than one being objectively better than the other.
