Why choose SkinKandy for piercing?

At SkinKandy, we’re the leaders in piercing for a reason. We combine legendary service with the highest industry standards to create a fun, safe, and unforgettable experience for every customer. Whether it’s your first piercing or your fiftieth, we’re here to help you express your bold, brave, and confident self!

How much does a piercing cost?

You’ll pay a piercing fee plus the cost of your preferred jewellery. We have options to suit every budget, so you can find something perfect without breaking the bank! Our most popular deal is 2 for $80.

How do I know if I have the right anatomy for a piercing?

Not every piercing suits every anatomy, and that’s where our expert piercers come in! Some piercings require a sufficient “lip” or edge to support the jewellery, while others need grabbable tissue or pliable surfaces. If you’re unsure, visit your nearest SkinKandy or book online a free consultation—we’ll assess your anatomy and recommend the best piercing options for you.

What is your piercing guarantee?

We want you to LOVE your piercing, so if it doesn’t feel quite right, we’ll fix it – for FREE! If you’ve been pierced at any SkinKandy store and something’s not working out, just keep the jewellery in and visit us within 7 days. Be sure to bring your aftercare card so we can assess the situation and take the necessary steps to make it perfect.

What training and qualifications do SkinKandy employees have?

At SkinKandy, we set the standard when it comes to piercing expertise! Each member of our SkinKandy Squad must earn a nationally accredited infection control certificate before they can pierce independently. While this certificate isn't required in some states, we believe in raising the bar for all our team members. Once they've got their certification and fully understand our high standards and values, they go through an extensive in-house training program. Under the supervision of senior piercers, they perfect their technique at their own pace, ensuring they are confident and capable before they pierce unsupervised.

Is everything clean and sterile?

Absolutely! All our staff hold a nationally accredited infection prevention certificate. We maintain an extremely clean and sterile environment, adhering to industry-leading hygiene practices to ensure your safety.

What do I need to know before getting pierced?

Do your research! Always ensure that the clinic is licensed and registered, and that your piercer holds an infection control certificate. Remember, cheap isn’t always better! We recommend using internally threaded, implant-grade titanium jewellery – your body will thank you for it! Also, consider your lifestyle (sports, pets, headphones, diet) before making your choice. It's important your piercing gets the best possible start in life.

What jewellery do you pierce with?

We use only the highest quality jewellery for your piercings, including 14K gold, titanium, and surgical steel. Each option is chosen for its durability, safety, and style, so you can feel confident and bold from the moment you get pierced.

Can I bring my own jewellery to be pierced with? What if I bought it from SkinKandy's online store?

Unfortunately, we can’t use outside jewellery as we cannot guarantee the quality of the metal. For safety and sterility, we only pierce with SkinKandy piercing jewellery purchased at the time of your appointment.. During your appointment, you’ll consult with a piercer who can recommend the best pieces for you based on your unique anatomy.

All of our piercing jewellery is made from high-quality metals, including surgical steel, titanium, or 14K gold.

If you’ve purchased fashion jewellery online from SkinKandy for fully healed piercings, we’re happy to help! You can book a jewellery change appointment HERE for this service.

How many piercings can I get at once?

We cap the number of piercings performed in one sitting at 4. This ensures your body has the best change at healing your new piercings and helps minimise the risk of adverse reactions. This will depend on your anatomy, the position of the piercings, and previous healing experiences. Multiple piercings in a small area may increase the chance of excessive swelling, and as such may be limited to 2 or 3 in one sitting. Please discuss options with one of our professional piercers prior to your appointment.

Can I have both ears pierced at the same time?

Absolutely! For needle-free piercings (1st and 2nd lobes), we offer a Double Operator Service (an extra $15), where two of our team members pierce both lobes at the same time. It’s perfect for little ones or if you're in a hurry. You can book this service online or chat with our customer support team for more details.

What does SkinKandy pierce with?

All body piercings are performed with single use sterile needles. We do however, offer a needle-free option for 1st and 2nd lobe piercings. The needle-free option uses a single-use, sterile cartridge system that’s not spring-activated, making it gentle and hygienic.Want to know more information about the needle-free option? Check here.

Do you use piercing guns?

No, we don’t use old-school piercing guns. These are spring-loaded and can’t be sterilised, which may cause unnecessary damage to the tissue and increase the risk of infection. At SkinKandy, we use a sterile, single-use cartridge system that applies gentle hand pressure to pierce the lobe with sterile jewellery. Our Needle-Free piercings are available for 1st and 2nd lobe piercings only. We don’t recommend using piercing devices or needle-less systems on other areas of the body, especially ear cartilage or nostrils.

How long do I need to wait to get more piercings?

We can generally do up to 4 piercings in one sitting. Depending on how many you get and how many more you’re wanting, we recommend waiting around 4-6 weeks. It’s important to let your body do its magical thing and not overwhelm it with too much to heal at once.

I’m prone to fainting. Can I still get pierced?

Yes, you can! Just let your piercer know so they can ensure your safety. If you need to lie down for your piercing, you can stay in that position for a few minutes afterward until you’re feeling fine. We’ll make sure you’re 100% before you leave.

Can I get pierced with a retainer?

Yes, we offer glass retainers for nose piercings. However, while they are more discreet, keep in mind that they won’t be completely invisible. So, if discretion is important to you, just be aware of that.

How can I make an appointment?

You can book online or call us on 1300 129 991.

Do you take appointments? What about walk-ins?

We accept both walk-ins and appointments, but bookings take priority. Secure your spot by booking online or calling our customer support team.

What do I need to do to prepare for my appointment?

Before your appointment, make sure you’ve had a good meal within the last 4 hours to avoid feeling dizzy. A sugary drink and a salty snack are a good idea to bring along, just in case! Don’t forget your photo ID (required in most cases). All clients must complete a consent form and address any pre-existing conditions or medications that may affect your ability to get pierced. Arriving 10 minutes early is a good idea to get these details sorted. It’s also helpful to think about your piercing location (e.g., belly button) and choose clothing accordingly.

What happens during my appointment?

Once we’ve chosen the perfect jewellery, the piercing area will be cleaned and marked. You'll have a chance to double-check the placement before we proceed. All equipment is sterile and single-use, and after the piercing is done, you’ll see that perfect result – and your once anxious face will turn into a big smile! Before you leave, we’ll go over aftercare instructions so you know exactly how to care for your new piercing.

Can I apply numbing cream before my appointment?

The effectiveness of numbing spray or cream during a piercing procedure is questionable, as it typically only numbs the first few layers of skin. Some piercers believe numbing agents containing lidocaine may change the skin’s tension, potentially affecting how the piercing sits once the spray or cream wears off.

While it’s not something we actively promote or use in-store, choosing to use a numbing agent before you arrive is a personal decision. Please inform your piercer if you have applied a numbing agent before your procedure.

How old do I need to be to get a piercing?

6 months - 1st Lobe Piercing with Cartridge System
5 years - 1st Lobe Piercing with Needle
10 years - 2nd Lobe Piercings (Seconds)
13 years - Standard Needle Piercings (including 3rd Lobes or Thirds)
16 years - Standard Piercings without Parental Consent (except in WA)
16-17 years - Advanced Piercings with Parental Consent
18 years - All Piercings, including Advanced and Restricted 18+

(Note: In WA, you must be 18 years old to get a piercing without consent.)

Can I get a nipple piercing if I'm under 18?

No. Nipple and genital piercings are restricted to clients 18 years of age or older, and photo ID must be provided. No exceptions.

Which IDs do I need to bring to get a piercing done?

At SkinKandy, we take our responsibility to protect our customers seriously. You may be asked to provide proof of age and/or guardianship prior to your piercing procedure. Here are the requirements:

Lobe Piercings with Cartridge (Ages 6 months - 15 years): - A parent or legal guardian must consent to the procedure.
- The parent or legal guardian must provide photo ID and proof of guardianship.

Standard (Needle) Piercings (Ages 5 - 15 years; 5-17 years in WA):- ID confirming your name and DOB (e.g., birth certificate, formal school ID, Medicare app).
- A parent or legal guardian must consent and provide photo ID and proof of guardianship.

All Piercings (Ages 16 years and over; 18 years in WA):- ID confirming your name, DOB, and photo (e.g., driver's licence, passport).

Restricted 18+ Piercings:
- A single form of approved photo ID is required.

For more details, visit our ID page.

I'm starting to feel a bit sick. Can I still get pierced?

We highly recommend postponing your piercing if you aren’t feeling your best. This is to ensure your immune system can focus its attention on helping your piercing heal.

Can I bring my child with me to my appointment?

We love kids and they are always welcome in our store! However, it’s not always appropriate to have them in the clinic with you during a piercing.

We’d like to have your undivided attention and you need to have ours. Any kind of distraction can quickly become a hazard and we don’t want anything to compromise your safety (or ours!). So, if you have little ones that need supervision, please either bring someone along to watch them during your procedure or come on your own – what a perfect excuse for some “you” time!

Can I get pierced if I'm pregnant?

We can't pierce anyone who’s pregnant due to the higher risk of infection. Your body is busy growing and caring for new life, which can impact how well a piercing heals. After giving birth, your body needs time to recover and focus on your little one. We recommend waiting at least 3 months after giving birth if you’re not breastfeeding, or 6 months if you are, before getting a piercing.

I have a medical condition and taking medication. Can I still get a piercing?

There are certain medical conditions and medications that need careful consideration in determining if it’s safe to perform a piercing. In some cases, a medical certificate is required before proceeding. It’s our duty of care to ensure we are doing what’s right for you and we will never do anything to compromise your safety. Please contact our customer care team for more information before making an appointment.

Do you pierce minors?

Yes, we do! We pierce children’s ear lobes starting from 6 months, following an in-house anatomy consultation. If the lobes are too small, we may advise waiting to ensure proper placement, which is important for the piercing’s comfort and healing as the child grows.

How old does my child need to be to get their ears pierced?

We can pierce children’s ear lobes from 6 months, pending an in-house anatomy consultation. If the lobes are too small, it can be difficult to place the piercings correctly, which may cause the piercings to move or migrate as the lobes grow. Improper placement can also make the jewellery sit uncomfortably and slow the healing process. If we determine the earlobes are too small, we will advise waiting a little longer.

How long does it take to get a child’s ears pierced?

The actual piercing takes just a couple of seconds! However, it’s best to allow 10-15 minutes for the entire process, including choosing the jewellery, getting comfortable in the clinic, and selecting the correct placement.

What jewellery do you recommend for kids piercing?

We recommend titanium jewellery for initial piercings. It’s a premium-quality metal that’s up to 60% lighter than others, putting less weight on little lobes. Titanium is also hypoallergenic and free of nickel, which promotes faster healing. We have a large variety of options in-store, and our SkinKandy Squad will help you choose the best piece for your child.

Does every piercer have experience with kids' lobes?

Yes! All our piercers undergo specialised training as part of our extensive piercing program, ensuring they are well-equipped to perform children’s lobe piercings. You’ll find highly experienced staff in every SkinKandy store.

What if my child changes their mind?

We will never force your child to get pierced if they show signs of reluctance. We don’t open the jewellery from the sterile package until we’re ready to proceed, and we’ll always check with your child to ensure they are comfortable and happy to go ahead. If they change their mind before the earrings are opened, no worries at all!

How do I clean my new piercing?

- Never remove or rotate the jewellery when cleaning a fresh piercing, and avoid touching it with your fingers.
- Start with a warm shower to gently rinse the area, loosening any build-up.
- Use sterile saline spray (available at all SkinKandy stores) directly on the piercing twice daily.
- For any crusty build-up, soak the area with saline spray, then gently remove it with a soaked cotton tip.
- Pat the area dry with a clean tissue or makeup pad.
- Avoid using towels, as they can harbour bacteria.
- Ensure your saline solution is alcohol-free and stored correctly for future use.

Learn more about aftercare in our guide.

How long should my piercing be swollen for?

Everyone heals differently, but typically, you’ll notice swelling start to go down within 6-8 weeks, provided you’re following proper aftercare. Stick to your routine, and you’ll be on your way to a healthy piercing!

What is downsizing and why is it important?

Downsizing refers to changing your jewellery to a sterile shorter piece once the initial swelling has gone down. If you leave the longer jewellery in place for too long, it can cause irritation and affect healing. Most piercings can be downsized after 6-8 weeks, but we recommend you do so with a professional piercer’s help to ensure it’s done properly.

How long should I wait before downsizing my jewellery?

We recommend waiting at least 6-8 weeks before downsizing your jewellery to a shorter, sterile piece. We prefer that you come back for a free check-up so we can assess your piercing and even change the jewellery for you. Don’t rush the process – it's important not to downsize too quickly or change jewellery before your piercing is fully healed.

Can I go swimming with my new piercing?

We strongly recommend avoiding swimming (in pools, oceans, lakes) until your piercing is fully healed. Bodies of water can contain bacteria that may cause infections. If swimming is a must, apply a waterproof dressing over the piercing, but be sure it seals properly to keep water out. Always remove the dressing as soon as you’re done swimming.

I think my piercing is infected. What should I do?

While we follow the highest infection control standards, your role in aftercare is crucial. It’s normal for a new piercing to be slightly red, swollen, or sore in the first few weeks. However, if you suspect infection, don’t remove the jewellery – this can lead to an abscess. Visit a doctor immediately for proper treatment, and come to SkinKandy for a free check-up so we can offer advice.

I have a bump on my piercing, what should I do?

A bump is often a sign of irritation or healing. The best thing to do is assess the cause – is it the placement, the quality of jewellery, or accidental bumps? If you’re unsure, visit us for a free check-up so our professional piercers can advise you on next steps.

Are “crusties” a bad sign on a new piercing, even if I clean it regularly?

No need to worry! Crusty build-up is completely normal as part of the healing process. Think of it like scabbing over a cut – it’s your body’s way of protecting the wound. However, if the crust changes colour or becomes excessive, it’s worth checking in with us.

All my piercings end up infected, irritated or rejecting. Should I keep trying?

We understand your frustration. It’s important to differentiate between an infection, irritation, or a piercing that’s not fully healed. If you suspect infection, see a doctor right away. Otherwise, it may be due to poor jewellery quality, piercing placement, or aftercare. If none of those are issues, patience is key – healing takes time, and everyone's body reacts differently. Lifestyle factors like sports, pets, or diet can affect healing too.

How should I care for my lobe piercings?

- Avoid touching your piercing and never sleep on it. Use a travel pillow to keep pressure off your ear.
- Clean daily with sterile saline spray and avoid removing the jewellery during the healing process.
- Stay away from swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Regularly check the earring backings to ensure they aren’t too tight.
- Avoid wearing over-the-head headphones, as they can cause pressure, movement, and irritation to the piercing jewellery.
- Healing typically takes 3–4 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if downsized by a professional.

How do I care for cartilage ear piercings?

- Never touch or apply pressure to your piercing.
- Clean with sterile saline spray and avoid removing the jewellery during the healing process.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water and rinse well after showers.
- Use a travel pillow to avoid sleeping on the piercing and change pillowcases regularly.
- For piercings in tight spaces (such as rooks, forward helix), we recommend the use of a handheld electric fan to dry the area thoroughly. Excess moisture promotes bacterial growth and creates an environment that hinders healing.
- Avoid over-the-head headphones for outer ear piercings (e.g., helix, flat, industrial) and in-ear headphones for inner ear piercings (e.g., conch, tragus, rook, daith) to prevent pressure, movement, and irritation of the jewellery.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

How do I care for nose piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Avoid placing foreign chemicals or objects inside the pierced nostril, as some medicated nasal sprays can disrupt the healing process.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

What’s the aftercare for eyebrow piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 4-6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

How should I care for mouth and oral piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing.
- Clean your new piercing with sterile saline only, and rinse your mouth with clean water after spraying, spitting it out into a sink.
- Get a new toothbrush to reduce bacteria exposure.
- Avoid changing your dental hygiene routine, as excessive cleaning can increase the risk of oral thrush. If mouthwash is part of your routine, use only alcohol-free mouthwash.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Downsize your initial piercing jewellery according to your piercer's recommendations to prevent any dental damage.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 4–6 months depending on the type of piercing. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if needed.

Things to avoid while healing your oral piercing:

-Alcohol: Can cause swelling and disrupt the balance of bacteria, leading to oral thrush.
-Dairy: Adds bacteria, which can interfere with the healing process and aftercare.
-Tooth whitening products: Can be too harsh on new piercings, increasing the risk of tissue issues.
-Smoking (including vaping, nicotine, and cannabis): Slows healing due to irritation and harmful chemicals.

How do I care for navel piercing?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- For piercings in tight spaces such as navel, we recommend the use of a handheld electric fan to dry the area thoroughly. Excess moisture promotes bacterial growth and creates an environment that hinders healing.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

What’s the aftercare for septum piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Avoid placing foreign chemicals or objects inside the pierced nostril, as some medicated nasal sprays can disrupt the healing process.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

How do I care for bridge piercing?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6-12 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

How should I care for nipple piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- For people with breasts, wearing a bra or bralette is advised to prevent the piercing from snagging.
- Menstruating individuals should ensure their jewellery allows for nipple swelling during their cycle, with at least 1mm of space on each side post-healing. Consult your piercer to confirm a proper fit.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

What’s the aftercare for surface piercings?

- Avoid touching the piercing and clean daily with sterile saline spray.
- Keep the area free from makeup, cleansers, or moisturisers.
- Avoid swimming or soaking in water, and rinse thoroughly after showers.
- Healing times vary but generally takes about 6 months. Jewellery changes can be done after 6–8 weeks if recommended by your piercer.

How do I care for dermal piercings?

Your new dermal piercing should be kept covered for at minimum 4-6 weeks using a bandaid, this will ensure the area is secure from knocks and will protect it from bacteria during its initial healing phase. Clean twice per day with sterile saline solution. Remove the bandaid carefully before cleaning to ensure it isn’t stuck to the jewellery, and replace with a new, clean Band-Aid after you have completed your aftercare routine. Healing time can take up to 6-12 months, but tops can usually be changed to sterile jewellery from 12 weeks. Please visit your local store for an in-house check-up with one of our expert piercers. Swelling (and sometimes bleeding and bruising) can be expected.

Please note: Dermal removal must be performed by a GP or licensed medical professional
