Types of Nipple Piercings
A nipple piercing can be done on most people, regardless of their gender. Let’s explore the different types of Nipple Piercings.
Ladies nipple piercing
Those assigned female at birth (our AFAB friends) often have more prominent nipple tissue than their AMAB (assigned male at birth) mates. That means AFAB people often find they have more options for piercing placement. The downside is that they may also experience a little more sensitivity and slightly longer healing times.
An experienced piercer will consider the size and shape of your nipple to ensure the piercing heals properly and looks great for years to come.
Male nipple piercing
For those assigned male at birth, nipple piercings also offer a distinctive form of self-expression. They usually have less prominent nipple tissue, which will affect the placement and type of jewellery used. Our piercers will consider your anatomy to ensure a secure and good-looking result.
Less tissue can mean less pain, so you might find you experience less discomfort and a faster healing time than your AFAB friends.
Inverted nipple piercing
Got inverted nipples? Don’t let that stop you getting a nipple piercing. The piercing process may be slightly different to accommodate your anatomy and your piercer will be able to answer any questions you have. Healing times can be similar to other nipple piercings, but you might have to take a little extra care to monitor the piercing’s effect on the nipple.
Nipple Piercing basics: your go-to guide
No doubt you have questions. Lucky for you we have the answers. Let’s get the lowdown on Nipple Piercings.
What age can you get a Nipple Piercing?
If you’re under 18 you will have to wait. Nipple Piercings are only available to those over 18 (with photo ID).
How much does a Nipple Piercing cost?
At SkinKandy, you can get a Nipple Piercing from just $55. Check out our Piercing Menu for more information on cost and ask your piercer if you’re eligible for our two-for-one combo.
How is a Nipple Piercing performed?
It’s typically done with a 14-gauge straight barbell. The piercer will assess your anatomy, checking on how best to perform the piercing. The nipple is thoroughly cleaned to prevent infection and a hollow needle swiftly creates the hole, before the barbell is inserted.
It’s really important to choose an experienced piercer as they understand the nuances of anatomy and can ensure the piercing is done correctly with the right jewellery. With an experienced piercer and the right aftercare, your nipple piercing can be an empowering experience.
Can I get a Double Nipple Piercing?
Can’t decide which nipple to pierce? Do both. Many clients love the symmetry of a double piercing. Healing times remain the same as a single, but you’ll just have to practise good aftercare on two instead of one piercing.
Do Nipple Piercings hurt?
When you consider having a pierced nipple, it’s understandable to have concerns about pain. Nipples can be incredibly sensitive, but many of our clients are surprised that it’s not as uncomfortable as they expected.
The experience will vary from person to person and will depend on your pain tolerance, anatomy and how calm you are during the procedure. Most describe the pain as a sharp, intense pinch or sting that lasts only a few seconds.
After the procedure you might also experience tenderness and extra sensitivity in the area and even some swelling and redness, but this is nothing to worry about.
Can you breastfeed with Nipple Piercing?
If you plan to breastfeed in the future it’s important to chat to your piercer about this. It’s unlikely a piercing will affect breastfeeding (though you will have to wait for the piercing to fully heal before you do), but chat to your piercer or GP if you have any concerns.
What is the Nipple Piercing healing time?
This type of piercing can take 12 months or longer to heal completely.
It’s important to keep up with your aftercare even after it appears fully healed on the outside. Stopping your aftercare or changing jewellery too soon may damage the skin. Your piercer can confirm when you have fully healed and you can ditch the aftercare practices and change up your jewellery.
It’s rare but sometimes Nipple Piercings can get infected. If you believe you could have an infected piercing, talk to your piercer or see your GP. If you or a family member has had keloids in the past, let your piercer know as Nipple Piercings are not suitable for those with a history of keloids.
Nipple piercing aftercare
Proper aftercare is essential so you can enjoy a smooth healing process for your new piercing. When you shower, avoid touching it and gently pat around the piercing to ensure it's dry afterwards.
Your piercer will set you up with an aftercare spray to use twice a day. Ensure your nipple is dry before applying the spray, then give the piercing a thorough spritz. Use a makeup pad to gently dry the area. Follow the aftercare guide given to you by your SkinKandy piercer.
To prevent irritation and possible infection, you want to avoid touching or fiddling with your piercing. We also recommend wearing loose clothing to avoid irritation. A thick bra worn at night or when you’re active will help protect your piercing. And when you’re getting dressed, be mindful of fabric catching on your nipple.
Nipple Piercing jewellery
Okay, now the fun part. At SkinKandy, we have loads of nipple jewellery options for any Nipple Piercing – from sleek barbells to elegant rings.
When it comes to materials, titanium and gold are excellent choices, especially for those with sensitive skin. These high-quality metals not only look great but also promote better healing.
Your SkinKandy piercer can help you choose the best type of jewellery suited to your anatomy and style. Let’s explore some options:
Barbells are classic and choice. They look awesome, aren’t likely to snag on clothes and provide room for swelling as your piercing heals.
Like the classic barbell, but designed specifically for nipples, the Nipple Bar allows you to add some bling to your new piercing.
These curved, open-ended rings are a great choice for the nipple and come in a range of styles. Check with your piercer on the suitability of these rings for your piercing.
