What nose piercings does this collection cover?
This collection spans the three nose placements we pierce at SkinKandy, which are standard nostril, high nostril and septum.
Standard nostril piercings are fitted at 18G or 20G, with the length set by your own anatomy, and they take L-bend studs, nose twists and bendable or segment rings, plus flatbacks at 18G. High nostril piercings sit higher on the side of the nose and are the exception, fitted with a 16G flatback at 8mm.
Septum piercings run through the tissue between your nostrils at 16G and take a segment ring or horseshoe at 8mm or 10mm, with a 14G horseshoe at 10mm if you prefer a larger fit, which is what you'll find in septum rings. If you're not sure which placement you have, our piercing specialists can confirm it in studio.
Should I choose a nose ring or a nose stud?
Choose a stud for a fresh nostril piercing and a ring once that piercing has healed.
Studs are the style our piercing specialists fit at the time of piercing, at 18G or 20G for L-bends and nose twists and 18G for flatbacks, and they sit close to the skin, so all three live in nostril jewellery. Rings sit more visibly against the nostril and cover bendable rings, seamless rings and smaller segment rings, grouped together as nose rings. A septum piercing works differently, since it can take a ring style from the start at 16G. Once your nostril piercing has healed, book in and we'll change the jewellery for you and check the new piece fits.
What gauge is nose piercing jewellery?
Nostril L-bends and nose twists are fitted at 18G or 20G, nostril flatbacks at 18G, and high nostril jewellery at 16G with an 8mm length.
Nostril rings run 6mm to 10mm in diameter and a nostril flatback sits at 6mm or 8mm, with the exact fit set by where your piercing sits on the nostril, so a piece that fits one person won't always fit another.
Septum jewellery is 16G at 8mm or 10mm, in a segment ring or horseshoe, with a 14G horseshoe at 10mm if you prefer a larger fit. High nostril is the one nostril placement that doesn't use 18G or 20G, which is why its flatbacks aren't interchangeable with standard nostril studs. Our piercing specialists will measure your placement and confirm the fit before anything new goes in.
What's the difference between an L-bend and a nose twist?
An L-bend has an angled post that sits flush inside your nostril, while a nose twist has a curved post that follows the curve of the nostril for easy insertion. Both are fitted at 18G or 20G, so the difference is in how the post is shaped and how it goes in, not in gauge or fit.
L-bend nose jewellery holds its position with that fixed bend, which makes it a steady everyday option. Nose twists thread along the curve as you insert them, and the twist keeps the post seated once it's in. Flatbacks are the third nostril style, with a flat disc back rather than a bend, and they're fitted at 18G.
Is Surgical Steel or Titanium better for a fresh nose piercing?
Surgical Steel can be used in fresh piercings, though our piercing specialists recommend implant grade Titanium during the healing phase.
The difference that matters here is nickel, since Surgical Steel carries a trace of it and Titanium carries none, so Titanium is the safer pick if your skin reacts to jewellery. That trace nickel is also why Surgical Steel isn't hypoallergenic, though it's still a valid everyday material our piercing specialists work with in studio. 14K Gold also suits sensitive skin and is the usual choice for a healed upgrade rather than a fresh piercing. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, and book in with us when you're ready to change it.
