Types of Navel Piercings
Standard Navel Piercing
This Navel piercing is typically done through the upper rim of the navel. Initial piercing jewellery is usually a curved barbell with silver or gemmed balls.
Lower Navel
Similar to the standard Navel piercing, this one is done through the lower rim of the navel.
Double Navel Piercing
Can’t decide whether to go for a standard or lower navel piercing? Lets make like t.A.T.u and twin it! A Double Navel piercing involves having two piercings on the navel, usually one on the upper rim and one on the lower rim but with the right anatomy, could be paired sides!

Floating Navel Piercing
A floating navel piercing is usually performed on those who do not have the anatomy for a traditional navel piercing. This piercing is done on a slightly deeper angle, using jewellery that will better accommodate your anatomy (a J like curved bar, disc on the bottom). *These piercings are not currently available at Skinkandy, but stay tuned!*
Navel Piercings: the basics
Okay so you probably have lots of questions about Navel piercings. We’ve heard them all. Before booking in with us, read on to discover the basics!
Can anyone get a Navel Piercing?
The type of piercing that will work best for you depends on your anatomy. That’s why we will get you in for a free initial consultation so we can chat about your options. Contrary to some belief, navel piercing anatomy doesn’t rely on your weight or fitness level. Simply, it is all to do with how your navel forms throughout childhood and puberty as well as how your abdomen creases when bent over/ sitting.
How old do I have to be for a Navel Piercing?
From 13 years of age, you can get a piercing with parental consent. Don’t have that consent? You have to wait until you’re 16. However, in WA you have to be 18 years or older to get a piercing without parental consent.
How much does a Navel Piercing cost?
At SkinKandy, our Navel piercings start at $45 each. We have a plethora of beautiful premium jewellery we can use for your initial piercing!
Want more than one piercing? Some clients like to have a few piercings done at the same time. Have a chat with our staff who can answer any questions you might have.

How is a Navel piercing performed?
The good news is it’s pretty fast and simple. Navels are typically pierced with a 14-gauge curved bar with a 5mm and 8mm gem, or in some cases, a gem on top and smaller ball on the bottom, depending on your anatomy.
Lower navels are usually pierced with a 14-gauge curved barbell with two 4mm balls.
Your piercer will assess your anatomy and help you chose the jewellery best suited to your anatomy. From there they will mark your navel up, lay you down, pierce through your navel!
For a more detailed explanation of how these piercings are performed, please have a chat to one of our friendly piercers in store!
Do Navel Piercings hurt?
The discomfort of a piercing will depend on your tolerance for pain. A lot of our clients describe it as a quick, sharp pinch that only lasts during the actual piercing process. You might also have some soreness for a few days after your piercing as it heals. It’s important to follow our aftercare instructions to minimise pain and promote healing.
How long does it take a Navel Piercing to heal?
Navel piercings take a minimum of 6 months to heal, with everyone’s healing experience being different! It all depends on your commitment to aftercare, your immune system and the quality of your jewellery. We always recommend our implant grade titanium, and a sterile saline solution for your aftercare, to ensure all the odds are in your favour! Your piercer will provide you with in depth aftercare information post piercing, to ensure you know exactly how to care for your new piercing!
Navel piercing aftercare
Whenever you have a new piercing, aftercare is so important. Here are some helpful tips on how to ensure you have a happy, healthy piercing!
- Only clean your new piercing with sterile saline! We offer sterile saline spray at all Skinkandy stores!
- Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before undertaking your aftercare routine.
- Ensure to check your jewellery is secure during your daily aftercare routine.
- Avoid playing with or twisting the jewellery, especially with dirty hands- this can cause pressure blisters and introduce bacteria to the piercing site.
- Try your best to avoid sleeping or laying on your piercing- this can cause migration and pressure blisters.
- Clean towels and bedding regularly, to minimize the bacteria on these items, as even with utmost caution, may come into contact with your new piercing.
- Refrain from swimming in pools, lakes and oceans for at minimum 6-8 weeks post piercing- this can introduce bacteria to your new piercing and cause really bad infections. If swimming is unavoidable during this time, a waterproof patch can be used to cover and seal over the piercing to avoid coming into contact with the water.
- Do not put oils, creams, fake tans etc on your new piercing site, again- this can increase the risk of irritation and infection.
- Be mindful of clothing and accessories near the piercing area- snagging your piercing is never a good time!
- Do not attempt to change the initial jewellery to fashion jewellery prior to your full healing time. If you are unsure if your piercing is ready to be changed, please come visit us!
Some redness, tenderness, swelling and bleeding can be expected during the initial healing process. If you are concerned, be sure to visit one of our friendly piercers in store to have a chat, or visit your local health care professional.
What happens if I get an infected Belly Button Piercing?
While it’s unlikely that your piercing will become infected with proper aftercare, it’s important to keep an eye on it for signs of infection. This might be redness, swelling, discharge and even a fever.
If you’re concerned about the healing of your piercing, chat with a friendly piercer in-store, or book in to see your GP.
Can I get a Navel piercing while pregnant?
The short answer is no. Why? Well, your body has to work pretty hard to grow a human. New piercings do carry the risk of infection, and when you’re pregnant there’s a chance your piercing won’t heal well.
Once you’ve given birth, your body also needs time to heal. Our advice is to wait at least six months after giving birth before getting a piercing.
