A beginner’s guide to Conch Piercing

A beginner’s guide to Conch Piercing

Ever wondered what it feels like to have a little piece of the ocean with you at all times? No, we’re not talking about carrying around a seashell in your pocket. We’re diving into the world of Conch Piercings.

Named after the conch shell due to its location in the ear’s inner cartilage (we’ll wait while you do a Google image search to see for yourself), a Conch Piercing is the perfect little nod to your inner mermaid (or merman). Celebs like Rihanna, Zoë Kravitz and Miley Cyrus have all been spotted flaunting their stylish Conch Piercings, and we’re all here for it.

Whether you’re a piercing veteran or just want to up your ear game, this guide to Conch Piercings will walk you through everything you need to know. So, let’s shell-ebrate this piercing and explore why everyone is clamouring for conch!

What is a Conch Piercing?

A Conch Piercing sits in the deep central cartilage shell of the ear called the ‘concha’. It’s important to understand the differences between the two types of Conch Piercings: Inner versus Outer Conch Piercing.

Inner Conch Piercing

This is done in the central part of the ear’s cartilage, closer to the ear canal. It usually involves popping a stud in or adding a hoop that circles through the ear.

Outer Conch Piercing

This one is located on the flat portion of the cartilage, between the helix (which is the outer edge of the ear) and the anti-helix (the inner ridge).

Not sure which one to get? Why not both? These piercings are great for mixing up studs and hoops.

Let’s deep dive into Conch Piercings

At this stage we bet you have a few questions. Well, we have a few answers.

What’s the minimum age to get a piercing?

Ready to add some sparkle to your conch? If you’re 13 to 15 years old, you can get pierced with a thumbs-up from your parents. Haven’t got the parental green light? You’ll have to wait until you’re 16. Those in WA have to wait until they’re 18 before they can go solo on that piercing adventure.

How much does a Conch Piercing cost?

We’re glad you asked. SkinKandy Conch Piercings start at $45 but have a chat with your piercer to see if you’re eligible for a two-for-one combo. Want to know more? Check out our Piercing Menu.

How are Conch Piercings performed?

Generally, Conch Piercings are performed with a 14-gauge Flatback Post or Straight Barbell. But depending on your ear, a 16-gauge may also be suitable. Your piercer will be able to give you advice on which is best for your ears.

You can then switch to your jewellery of choice about 12 weeks after the piercing. Got your heart set on rocking a Ring in your Conch Piercing once it heals? Give your piercer the head’s up. They’ll need to position the piercing in just the right spot for future bling.

How much does a Conch Piercing hurt?

We’re not gonna lie — piercing cartilage is generally more painful than a lobe piercing. So we get that some clients might be a bit nervous about embracing the Conch Piercing. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, so we can’t say exactly how much it hurts, but the good news is our piercers are the best in the business and the process is super quick.

How long does a Conch Piercing take to heal?

After the initial piercing we advise you to wait about six to eight weeks before downsizing to shorter, sterile jewellery. Wait at least 12 weeks before transitioning to a Ring. It takes up to 12 months for the piercing to fully heal.

If the skin around the piercing becomes red or swollen, you notice pain, tenderness or discharge from the piercing or you’re experiencing fever or nausea, you may have an infected Conch Piercing. If this doesn’t clear up with proper aftercare, contact your piercer or make an appointment to see your GP.

Aftercare

To prevent infection and promote healing, aftercare is really important. When showering, don’t touch your piercing or get heavy with the soap — just let the water flow over it. Dry the area around the new piercings carefully with a makeup pad or clean gauze.

Once the area is nice and dry, it’s time to use an aftercare spray (our piercers can set you up with the one we recommend). Give your piercing a decent spray without drowning it. Then get a fresh makeup pad and dry your ear. Use the spray morning and night and follow the aftercare guide we sent you after your new piercing.

Avoid touching a healing piercing and avoid sleeping on it or adding any sort of pressure to it with things like helmets and earphones. Clean a fresh piercing twice a day and don’t take out the jewellery for any reason, unless your piercer gives you the okay. It’s also a good idea to avoid swimming during the healing process.
