Guided Internally Threaded Jewellery at SkinKandy
SkinKandy's Guided Internally Threaded collection covers dermal tops, surface piercings, cheek and dahlia placements, all fitted at 14G. Rather than threading on the outside of the post, the thread sits inside the jewellery itself, so the smooth end of the post is what passes through your skin as you change tops. This makes it a common choice for placements where comfort and a flush fit matter, like dermals and surface piercings. Our guide to guided threaded jewellery walks through how the system works in more detail.
Which piercings use internally threaded jewellery?
Dermal anchors use an internally threaded top, available in a 3mm or 4mm disc, fitted at 14G. Surface piercings use the same internally threaded top style, also at 14G. Cheek piercings are fitted with an internally threaded barbell at 14G, in a length of 12mm to 16mm, with a 4mm flat disc used on the inside to create a flatback finish. Dahlia piercings follow a similar setup, using an internally threaded barbell at 14G in a length of 10mm to 14mm.
What size are internally threaded jewellery pieces?
Dermal and surface piercing tops are fitted at 14G, with a disc size of 3mm or 4mm depending on the anchor. Cheek piercings use a 14G internally threaded barbell at 12mm to 16mm, and dahlia piercings use the same gauge at 10mm to 14mm. The disc or top size is chosen to suit your anatomy and the depth of the anchor, so this isn't a one-size-fits-all fitting. Your piercing specialist measures and confirms the correct size before fitting any internally threaded piece.
How do I change an internally threaded top?
Internally threaded tops unscrew from the anchor or bar, allowing you to swap the visible top without removing the anchor itself. Because the base of a dermal or surface piercing generally isn't changed once fitted, it's usually only the top that gets swapped over time. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, and speak with your piercing specialist before attempting to change a top yourself if your piercing is still fresh. Our dermal piercing guide covers care and jewellery options for these placements.
What materials are internally threaded tops available in?
Internally threaded tops and barbells are available in Surgical Steel, Titanium and 14K Gold. Surgical Steel is what our piercing specialists use for fresh piercings in studio, while Titanium and 14K Gold are better suited if you have sensitive skin, since they don't carry the trace nickel found in Surgical Steel. All three materials are fitted at the same 14G gauge, so material comes down to sensitivity and style rather than sizing. Your piercing specialist can talk you through the options at your appointment.
How does internally threaded jewellery compare to threadless jewellery?
Internally threaded jewellery uses a screw-fit system, with the thread recessed inside the post so the smooth end sits against your skin as it's inserted. Threadless jewellery uses a push-fit pin instead of a screw thread, and it's typically used for smaller-gauge ear, nose, lip and labret placements rather than dermals or surface piercings. Neither style is used for large-gauge jewellery like plugs or tunnels. Your piercing specialist can help you work out which fitting system suits the placement you're after.
