Barbell Jewellery at SkinKandy

Barbell jewellery at SkinKandy is straight bar piercing jewellery used across a range of placements, from nipple and tongue piercings to industrial bars and the bridge. It's available in Titanium, Surgical Steel and Gold, with gauges and lengths that vary by placement, from 14G for nipple, tongue and industrial jewellery to 16G for vertical helix piercings. Barbells suit anyone who wants a secure, no-fuss style that sits flush through the placement without the curve of a curved barbell or the loop of a hoop. Whether you're after your first bar or replacing an old one, we've got sizing sorted for every barbell placement.

Which piercings use straight barbell jewellery?

Straight barbell jewellery is used for nipple piercings, tongue piercings, industrial bars, bridge piercings and vertical helix piercings. Nipple barbells are fitted at 14G with a length of 12mm, 14mm or 16mm, tongue barbells at 14G with a 14mm to 16mm length, and industrial bars at 14G spanning 34mm to 38mm across the two helix piercing points. Bridge piercings use a shorter 14G straight barbell at 10mm to 14mm, while vertical helix piercings take a smaller 16G barbell at 6mm or 8mm. Each placement needs its own specific length, so it's worth having a piercing specialist confirm your fit rather than guessing.

What gauge and length barbell do I need?

The gauge and length you need depends entirely on your placement, so always check before buying rather than assuming one size fits all. Nipple and tongue barbells are 14G, with nipple bars typically 12mm, 14mm or 16mm and tongue bars 14mm to 16mm to allow for swelling. Industrial barbells are also 14G but much longer, at 34mm to 38mm, since they span two separate helix piercing points. If your barbell is too short it can put pressure on the piercing, and if it's too long it can shift around and irritate the area, so our piercing specialists always measure in studio before fitting.

What materials are barbells available in?

Barbell jewellery at SkinKandy is available in Titanium, Surgical Steel and Gold. Surgical Steel can be used in fresh piercings, though it contains trace nickel, so Titanium or Gold are better choices if you have sensitive skin. Titanium is lightweight and a reliable option for placements like nipple and industrial piercings that take longer to heal. Gold barbells are a premium option once you're fully healed and want to upgrade your everyday jewellery.

Barbell vs curved barbell, which do I need?

A straight barbell has a flat bar with no bend, while a curved barbell has a slight arch that follows the natural curve of certain placements. Straight barbells suit nipple, tongue, industrial and bridge piercings, where the placement itself is straight, while curved barbells are used for placements like rook, anti-tragus, daith and eyebrow, where a curved bar sits more comfortably against the anatomy. Choosing the wrong shape can make jewellery uncomfortable or difficult to insert, so it's worth confirming which one your placement needs. Our piercing specialists can guide you to the right shape and length for your specific piercing.

Can I wear a barbell in a fresh piercing?

Yes, straight barbells are commonly used as the initial jewellery for placements like nipple, tongue and industrial piercings. Fresh piercings are usually fitted with a slightly longer bar to allow room for swelling, then downsized once the area settles. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, and only change to a shorter or different barbell once your piercing specialist confirms you're ready.
