Dermal Piercing Jewellery at SkinKandy

A dermal piercing sits as a single visible point on flat skin, using a 14G anchor placed under the skin with an internally threaded top screwed into place, in a 3mm or 4mm disc. It's available in Surgical Steel, Titanium and 14K Gold, fitted as part of your piercing. Unlike a standard piercing with two visible ends, a dermal has only one point showing, with the anchor sitting flat beneath the skin. This collection covers both fresh piercings and healed top upgrades.

What jewellery is used for a dermal piercing?

Dermal piercings use a 14G anchor placed under the skin, paired with an internally threaded dermal top in a 3mm or 4mm disc. The anchor base generally isn't changed once it's fitted, since it's set to sit flat under your skin at the correct depth. Only the visible top is designed to be swapped over time, screwing in and out of the anchor. Your piercing specialist fits the anchor and top together at your appointment.

What size is dermal piercing jewellery?

Dermal anchors are fitted at 14G, with tops available in a 3mm or 4mm disc depending on your anatomy and the specific placement. The anchor depth is measured and fitted by your piercing specialist rather than sold as a standard size. Because the anchor isn't something you change yourself, getting the initial fitting right matters more than with most other piercings. Your piercing specialist measures and confirms the correct size before fitting.

Is surgical steel safe for a fresh dermal piercing?

Yes, Surgical Steel is what our piercing specialists use for fresh dermal piercings in studio, and it's a safe, valid choice while you heal. It does contain trace nickel, so it isn't hypoallergenic, and Titanium or 14K Gold are better suited if you have sensitive skin. Do not remove your jewellery during the healing phase, as this can cause the piercing to close and increases the risk of the anchor migrating or being rejected. Your piercing specialist will talk you through aftercare specific to dermal placements.

How do I change the top on a dermal piercing?

The top unscrews from the anchor thanks to the internally threaded design, letting you swap the visible piece without removing the anchor itself. Speak with your piercing specialist before attempting to change a top yourself if your piercing is still fresh. Our dermal piercing guide covers care and jewellery options in more detail. Once healed, changing a top is generally straightforward and can be done at home.

How does a dermal piercing compare to a surface piercing?

A dermal piercing has only one visible point, with the anchor sitting entirely under the skin and just the top showing above the surface. A surface piercing has two visible entry and exit points, with the jewellery running just under the skin between them. Both use an internally threaded top at 14G in a 3mm or 4mm disc, so the jewellery itself is similar, but the structure underneath is different. Your piercing specialist can talk you through which suits the placement and look you're after.
